1. Lowe, Feild share Fort Worth bareback riding title
FORT WORTH – Didn’t this look familiar?
Just as Kaycee Feild and Will Lowe battled all of last season and into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December, there they were knocking heads to the very end of the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo on Feb. 4.
Lowe, the three-time world champion from Canyon, Texas, entered the final night at the Will Rogers Coliseum tied for the lead with Winn Ratliff and set the bar high with an 83-point ride on Andrews Rodeo’s Power Play.
But Feild responded by winning the final round with an 89-point ride on Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket to create a tie with Lowe for the title. Each man scored 323 points on four head to delight the sell-out crowd of 5,700.
“There are a lot of big rodeos out there and you would like all of them on your belt,” Lowe told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram after he had wrapped up his long-awaited first title at Fort Worth. “It can take a lot of pressure off of you when you have a good winter. The winter rodeo season can be long and dry sometimes, so it’s always nice to come out of it with a little padding.”
Cody Taton of Mud Butte, S.D., earned $13,259 after winning the saddle bronc riding and finished as the high-money winner of the 17-day, 30-performance rodeo, just ahead of tie-down roper Jared Kempker of Eugene, Mo.
Kempker’s total of $13,037 wasn’t just a career best for a single rodeo, it was more than he had earned in either of his first two seasons as a PRCA card holder.
Other champions were all-around cowboy Cimarron Boardman, Stephenville, Texas, ($2,627 in team roping and tie-down roping); steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy, Donalda, Alberta (12.4 seconds on three head); team ropers Erich Rogers, Round Rock, Ariz., and Kory Koontz, Sudan, Texas, (16.5 seconds on three head); bull rider Trevor Kastner, Ardmore, Okla. (242 points on three head) and barrel racer Nikki Steffes, Vail, S.D., (49.74 seconds on three runs).
Kastner clinched the title after turning in a final-round score of 91 on 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Cyber Cat, the highest mark of the 2½ week rodeo.
2. Brazile makes one-day trek to Badlands pay off
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo went to a new format this year and you can count 16-time World Champion Trevor Brazile among its fans.
Brazile made the trek of more than 1,000 miles from Texas to Barnett Arena on Feb. 2 because the timed-event titles were decided on one head this year, placing a premium on putting up fast times.
Brazile’s 7.8-second run won the tie-down roping by two-tenths of a second over Riley Pruitt – the son of 1990 World Champion Troy Pruitt – and the $4,621 he collected for that stood up to make him the rodeo’s all-around champion, as well.
“It’s a really good rodeo right now,” Brazile told the Rapid City Journal. “It pays about $6,000 per event, and the chance to come up for one night and make that kind of money is too good to pass up. You get paid better here now than with a two-head rodeo. You get paid for making good runs now.
“It’s a fresh format, and I wish I had done a little better in the team roping, but it is what it is.”
Brazile and fellow World Champion team roper Patrick Smith had a 4.3-second run, which would have won the rodeo, but they broke the barrier, incurring a 10-second penalty. Garrett Tonozzi and Kinney Harrell won the event with a time of 4.4 seconds.
Brazile and Smith finished second in the team roping average in Fort Worth, allowing Brazile to push his lead in the all-around world standings to more than $10,000 over second place Landon McClaugherty ($21,287 to $10,819).
The other BHSSR champions were bareback rider Steven Dent, Mullen, Neb. (83 points); steer wrestler Seth Murphy, South Heart, N.D. (3.5 seconds); saddle bronc rider Cole Elshere, Faith, S.D. (86 points); bull riders Garrett Vig, Newell, S.D., and Allen Helmuth, Eugene, Ore. (81 points each) and barrel racer Theresa Walter, Billings, Mont. (12.69 seconds).
3. Finally healthy, Samora is on top of the world
Of all the changes at the top of the world standings this past weekend – and there were six – none was quite as stunning as the ascension of bull rider Cody Samora to the No. 1 position just 30 days into his comeback season.
“It feels awesome,” Samora said. “I’m trying not to look at the world standings, but still ... awesome. I just want to go out and be consistent and do what I always felt I was capable of doing.”
Consistent? He’s entered six events in the last month and won checks at every one but Odessa, Texas. Samora has finished second in Denver; Fort Worth, Texas, and Los Fresnos, Texas; sixth in Lake Charles, La., and tied for fifth at the Fort Worth Xtreme Bull Division 2 event to earn $26,090.
Samora, of Cortez, Colo., lost six months of his rookie season after breaking his right (riding) wrist at the 2009 College National Finals Rodeo and undergoing surgery. He concentrated on college competition and jackpots in 2011 until he broke the wrist again at a competition in Dalhart, Texas, last June.
“I didn’t really have the money for a second surgery,” said Samora, 22, “so I just took care of it the best way I could and waited for it to heal.”
He went back to school at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, continued working as a farrier and started doing some self-help reading to get the mental aspect of his riding back where he needed it to be.
Now he’s on top of the world.
The other new standings leaders are steer wrestler Billy Bugenig of Ferndale, Calif.; team ropers Shane and John Philipp of Washington, Texas; saddle bronc rider Cody Taton and tie-down roper Riley Pruitt of Gering, Neb.
4. O’Mara undergoes surgery, out for four months
Bull rider Jacob O’Mara, who made his Wrangler NFR debut in 2011 and finished fifth in the world standings, underwent surgery at the Baton Rouge (La.) Surgery Center Feb. 6 on his left (riding) hand and will be sidelined for four months.
Dr. Rick Ahmad performed the operation to repair damage to the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFC). O’Mara was fitted with a splint and will begin rehab within a week.
O’Mara was 10th in the world standings at the time of the injury with earnings of $10,205.
“It’s not good,” said O’Mara’s mother, Denise, “but at least he won’t be starting at ground zero when he comes back.”
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Some of those old guys I watched (on television) still ride to this day, so it’s kind of cool to think that now I’m stealing some of their money.”
– Minnesota bull rider Brett Stall, 22, expressing to Detroit Lakes (Minn.) Online his sense of wonderment at the way his season has begun. His win at the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour event in Rapid City, S.D., and a win in the first round at the Fort Worth Stock Show Rodeo lifted his earnings to a career-best $20,661 after just four months; he is second in the world standings.

6. News and notes from the rodeo trail
Dr. Tandy Freeman was presented the Lane Frost Award Feb. 4 in Fort Worth for his long service as the medical director of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. The award is given annually through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to a person selected for having substantially enhanced the image of the sport of professional rodeo. Past winners include Trevor Brazile, Jim Shoulders, Boyd Polhamus and Justin Sportsmedicine co-founder J. Pat Evans. Freeman began practicing medicine in 1992 and joined the Justin program two years later. “Rodeo cowboys are very good athletes and they really appreciate what you do for them,” Freeman said. “The challenge is that they want to get better yesterday, but it’s because they love what they do.” … Bareback rider Jackie Wright, a two-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier (1964-65) and an inductee in the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo Hall of Fame, died Jan. 9 at Blue Mountain Nursing Home in Prairie City, Ore. He was 80. Wright won the bareback riding title at St. Paul in 1963 and three years later won both the saddle bronc riding and all-around titles there. Wright was a fixture around the rodeos in the 1960s as an “old-school cowboy,” who normally traveled with roughstock riders Jim Roeser and George Menkenmeier. Wright’s son, Scotty, carried on the family rodeo tradition by becoming a high school rodeo champion and competing in bareback riding throughout the Columbia River Circuit. Wright’s grandson, Zac Compton, also made his mark as a PRCA bareback rider, qualifying for the Ram Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo ... Lee McKenzie, a longtime member of the PRCA Board of Directors who served as Chairman in 1988-89, died Feb. 1 at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nev., after a brief illness. He was 71. A successful businessman in the Reno-Sparks area, McKenzie had a long association with the Reno Rodeo, starting out by selling programs and culminating with his service as President of the Reno Rodeo Association in 1983. His accomplishments include heading up the first national sponsor program and starting the Reno Rodeo Golf Tournament … The Fort Worth Stock Show set an attendance record this year and didn’t do it by half measures, surpassing 1 million for the first time two days before the end of the show. The old record was 955,800 in 2006 and by the time the doors shut at the Will Rogers Coliseum with the final performance of the rodeo on Feb. 4, the number was well above 1.1 million ... The Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo organizers in Rapid City, S.D., are still sifting through data, but are optimistic that they, too, have surpassed their attendance record. Civic Center Manager Brian Maliske estimates more than 333,000 fans visited the BHSSR this year, breaking the record of 320,000 set in 2009, with an estimated economic impact of $45 million … Jim and Julie Sutton were honored in the arena Feb. 2 on the occasion of their 35th anniversary as producers of the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo. During the Suttons’ tenure, the rodeo has 10 times been nominated as the PRCA Indoor Rodeo of the Year, winning the award in 2002 and 2003 … Climb on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train in San Francisco these days and you’re likely to see a poster of PRCA bull rider Keith Roquemore with the quote, “I’d probably spend my last dime to ride bulls.” It is part of a public information campaign and exhibit called Real Rural: Stories from the Rest of California, aimed at connecting urban residents with rural life in California. Apart from Roquemore, a cowboy from Cottonwood who qualified for the Ram California Circuit Finals Rodeo, the posters feature farmers, ranchers and amateur boxers … The stock contracting company Western Trails Rodeo of Webster, Minn., has been sold by Rex Walker, Jerome Robinson and Joe Simon to a group headed by Matt Williams and is now known as Silver Creek Pro Rodeo … The North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame met its Jan. 31 deadline on a $104,000 bond payment and is now ready to hire an executive director for the Medora facility. Board president Phil Baird told the Dickinson (N.D.) Press that there are six applicants for the vacant position … Coming off a year in which they enjoyed record attendance and ticket sales revenue, the organizers of the World’s Oldest Rodeo in Prescott, Ariz., are looking for even bigger things in 2012 as they celebrate the rodeo’s 125th year and Arizona’s 100th year of statehood. The rodeo committee met with the Prescott City Council in joint session Feb. 1 to discuss the $60,000 the city has in its budget for arena renovations and ways to promote the event … In order to increase attendance at this April 20-22 Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, event organizers are this year planning to present a downtown carnival on the coinciding dates.

The recognized leader in ProRodeo, the PRCA is committed to maintaining the highest standards. The PRCA, a membership-based organization, sanctions approximately 600 rodeos annually, and there are nearly 30 million fans in the U.S. The PRCA showcases the world’s best cowboys in premier events through the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour presented by Justin Boots, and its subsequent Justin Boots Playoffs, the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour presented by B&W Trailer Hitches; and the world-renowned Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Action from PRCA-sanctioned rodeos and its premier events appears on Great American Country (DISH Network 167, DirecTV 326) and Pursuit (DISH Network 240, DirecTV 608).
